Cranial osteopathy is a specialised diagnosis and treatment approach following on from American Osteopath Dr William Garner Sutherland in 1898 who observed that the bones of the cranium fitted together in a way that permitted small amounts of motion.
The motion that was found was independent from the heart and breathing motion but was a slow rhythmic motion which could be felt not only in the skull but throughout the body.
This involuntary motion is commonly referred to as the Primary Respiratory Mechanism (PRM).
The PRM consists of a very slow motion. Osteopaths diagnose and treat various characteristics of the motion observed using a finely tuned sense of touch. The treatment is gentle and appropriate for babies, children and adults.
Biodynamic Cranial Osteopathy
American osteopath Dr James Jealous combined Dr Sutherlands cranial osteopathy with a German embryologist Dr Erich Blechshmidt’s work to form an approach to osteopathy that he called ‘Biodynamics of osteopathy in the cranial field’. Where traditional cranial osteopathy concerned itself with the tissue lesions preventing full expression of the PRM, the biodynamic model was interested in the movement itself.
It was found that there was a correlation between subtle movement in metabolic fields in the developing human embryo and the movements of metabolic activity in adults. These same movements showed correlation between primary respiration and the potency of self repair (health) itself.
Please feel free to discuss your situation with me to see if osteopathic treatment would be a good option for you.
